The Institute was set up in 1981. It is united with the Chair of Internal Medicine of the Faculty for Medical Training, Novosibirsk Medical Institute. Director - professor Yury P. Nikitin.

The study of the prevalence, morbidity and mortality rate of internal diseases among population of Siberia, the Far East and the Far North. . The study of lipid metabolism and its disorders, their role in pathogenesis of internal diseases: atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular pathology, cholelithiasis, diabetes mellitus, obesity, cancer, and others. The development of the sci entific principles for prevention of chronic noncommunicable diseases. Since the time of the Institute's organization 9 doctors and 42 candidates of medical sciences have been trained. At the present time 56 scientific reseachers (7 doctors and 29 candidates of sciences) and 40 physicians (5 candidates of medical sciences) are involved into research and medical activity of the Institute. The staff of the Chair of Internal Medicine consists of 26 staff members (3 doctors and 15 candidates of medical sciences).

Institute of Internal Medicine carries out all-round studies of major internal diseases in order to identify the regularities of the origin and development of the diseases, the role of social and environmental factors and genetic characteristics of a body in the pathological process. The staff members are concerned with the study of the epidemiology of the major risk factors for internal diseases among the population and with the determination of the incidence and mortality rates of the diseases.
